Depth of field refers to the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp.
This compares shallow(low) depth of field and high depth of field. The picture on the left is a high depth of field it blurs out the person so you just focus on the plant. The picture on the right shows high depth of field because it blurred the background so you focus on the just the guy.
High depth is when you can see all of the picture and nothing is blurred out. You focus on the whole picture not just one piece of it like just the man or just the plant.
